The Cross Florida Barge Canal

WHAT IT IS

A canal to cut Florida in half, one third built, cancelled in 1971, now a 110-mile greenway with locks that lead nowhere.

The idea dated to the Spanish and was finally funded in the 1930s and again in the 1960s: a shipping channel straight across the peninsula. Environmental campaigning, led largely by the biologist Marjorie Harris Carr, stopped it after roughly a third of the work was done. What remains is a concrete lock in the woods at Inglis, a severed river, an earth dam, and a long thin state greenway named after Carr, complete with a land bridge carrying the trail over I-75.
