WHAT IT IS

A brick bench beside a grave. Leave an unopened beer on it overnight and it is said to be empty by morning.

Nineteenth-century cemeteries built brick chairs so mourners could sit with their dead. This one, in the Lake Helen–Cassadaga cemetery, acquired a reputation: sit in it after dark and you will hear the devil, or a phone call, depending on who is telling it. The beer test is the local version. Rangers and residents ask that you take your can with you, which suggests the outcome.
