WHAT IT IS
A former research habitat 21 feet down in a lagoon. You scuba to check in. Pizza arrives by diver.
La Chalupa was a 1970s research laboratory off Puerto Rico. Now it sits on the floor of the Emerald Lagoon and takes guests, who dive down through a moon pool in the floor and surface inside a dry room with beds, a shower, and windows full of angelfish. A diver delivers dinner in a waterproof case. It is the only underwater hotel in the United States and it is, unavoidably, a 1970s research laboratory.
