Nike Missile Site HM-69

WHAT IT IS

A Cold War missile base inside Everglades National Park, with a nuclear-capable missile still in the barn.

Built after the Cuban Missile Crisis, HM-69 kept Hercules missiles pointed south for three decades. The park now runs ranger tours through the barns, guard dog kennels, and assembly building; one missile remains on display where it sat. Sawgrass is taking the rest. The juxtaposition of a national park brochure and a nuclear launch site is not lost on anybody.
