WHAT IT IS
A 38-foot ring of basins cut into the bedrock at the mouth of the Miami River, roughly 2,000 years old, saved from a condo tower and then covered back over.
In 1998, demolition for a luxury development exposed a perfect circle of postholes carved directly into the limestone: the foundation of a Tequesta structure, unique in eastern North America. A public campaign and $27 million in county money stopped the towers. Archaeologists then reburied the circle under fill and sod to protect it, so what you visit is a small park with a sign, downtown, with the skyline above and the circle underneath.
