WHAT IT IS
Seven wooden houses standing on pilings a mile out in Biscayne Bay, all that remains of an offshore village.
It began in the 1930s with a shack selling bait and, reportedly, drinks beyond the reach of state liquor law. By the 1960s there were 27 buildings out on the flats, including a private club reachable only by boat. Hurricanes, arson, and a change in park jurisdiction reduced it to seven. They now sit inside Biscayne National Park, maintained under permit, empty, on stilts, with Miami's skyline behind them.
