WHAT IT IS

A cryptid research institute, gift shop, reptile pen, and campground, in one green building on the Tamiami Trail.

Dave Shealy has spent decades documenting a seven-foot, foul-smelling primate that he says lives in Big Cypress. The evidence room holds plaster footprint casts, blurred photographs, and eyewitness statements. Out back there are rescued pythons and alligators. Out front there is a very large statue. Whether or not you believe a word of it, the commitment is total, and the gift shop sells a Skunk Ape air freshener.
